"The architecture of the River Culture Pavilion ( ARC ) is an powerful formal statement that combines nature, technology and space to delineate a bold and striking architectural statement set  against the awe inspiring natural surroundings that encircle the buildings river side perch. The bold curved form of the ARC is a strong focal point set against the panoramic surroundings.  The material treatment of the buildings exterior contributes to the ethereal atmospheric quality of the pavilions presence on this site. In close proximity the building seems cloud like while from afar it is a striking sculpted form mimicking a natural rock like formation.  The ARC is designed to be in a symbiotic dialogue with it's surroundings and the environs of Daegu in celebration of the importance and powerful experiences of water and nature."

"The main architectural program of the ARC is that it houses a state of the art multimedia theater and spaces for innovative and tradition exhibitions. Within the architecture video, light, sound and movement all combine to produce a technological architecture symbiotically tethered to the natural surroundings and their phenomena and beauty. The visitor’s experience of this mediated environment takes place while moving through the pavilion’s exhibitions, culminating on the rooftop. From this elevated vantage point, on a roof terrace a pool of a water mirrors the vast sky above affording one another perspective on nature's profound beauty as framed by the ARC’s architecture."

ARC (River Culture Pavilion)는 자연과, 기술과, 공간을 결합하여, 강변을 두르고, 자연 환경에 대한 경외감 일으키는, 대담하며 인상적인 건축로, 표현한 서사시입니다. 대담한 곡선 형태의 ARC는 파노라마 환경을 배경으로, 강력한 시각의 점을 찍었습니다.

가까이에서 건물은 구름처럼 보이지만 멀리서 보면 자연적인 암석과 같은 모양의 인상적인 조각입니다. ARC는 물과 자연의 중요성과 소중함을 체험 또한 주변 대구시의 환경과 공생 대화하도록 설계되었습니다.

WITHWORKS 팀은 The ARC의 비정형 외장 전문가로 참여를 하였습니다. 주 골조는 철골과 콘크리트로 설계, 시공이 되었고, 외장곡면의 웅장함과 미묘한 디테일은 WITHWORKS의 Digital Engineering 기술로 완성을 시켰습니다.

UKC 2019 is hosted by three prestigious organizations – the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA), Korean Federation of Science & Technology Societies (KOFST), and Korea-U.S. Science Cooperation Center (KUSCO).The theme of UKC 2019 is “Smart Science, Engineering and Health for Livable Communities.” We would like to address technological challenges in the era of the 4th industrial evolution in building livable communities. Specifically, we will discuss these issues in three tracks: smart science, smart engineering and smart health. UKC 2019 provides valuable opportunities for cooperation between the United States and Korea. With a rich history of over thirty years, the UKC program includes plenary sessions, symposiums, forums and workshops that cover broad areas of science and technology.

건물은 Sanctuary, Library, Food Court, Commons, and Tea Pavilion로 구성되어 있고, 모두 한 지붕으로 연결되어 있습니다. 패널 시스템은 미묘한 이중 곡률을 가진 외부 양극 산화 처리 알루미늄의 표준 크기 시트로 구성됩니다. Withworks 의 미국파트너 Zahner에서 모든 지붕 설계와 제작을 했습니다.

코네디컷, 가나안에 위치한 Grace Farms (은혜의 농장) 은 자연속에서 다섯개의 건물들이 연결되어,  자연을 경험하고, 예술 활동을 하며, 정의를 추구, 지역 사회를 육성하고, 궁극적으로 신앙을 탐구하는 평화로운 휴식, 교육, 예술, 운동 공간으로 만들어졌다.

Two Young WITHWORKS Architects (Sangho Na, JiYoung Lee) visited LA and New York 
in January 2020 to learn global Market.

During New York Stay, Simon Shim had opportunities to visit SOM office and Dumbo Area in Brooklyn and Talk about Life and Work in WITHWORKS and Challenges in Digital Architecture and Fabrication in Construction Market.

Thanks to WITHWORKS Sungjin Kim's full support, they were able to come out of office to make two week trip. 

This is a first step of Globalization.

Meditation Pavilion: Scientist Path

Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) celebrates 50th Anniversary of Scientist Path 

 'Meditation Pavilion', designed by Architect Lee Jung-hoon.

 Present is Gift from the Past.  

 The Pavilion named Meditation is an inspiring space. Scientists ponder silently on the path in mankind's advancement.

A monumental cube is 3,650mm in 3D, which reflects KIST's Backward 50 and Forward 50.  

The words of  renowned scientists and Dr. Choi Hyeong-Seop, the first director of KIST are carved on Ultra-High-Performance Concrete Panels.

위드웍스의 김 성진 사장의 세계화 발걸음이 시작되다.

2019년 11월 21일, 뉴욕 맨하튼 다운타운에 위치한 Conrad 호텔에서 건축 외장계의 세계적인 자크 파사드 컨퍼러스가 열렸다.  전 세계 대 도시를 월드 투어하 듯,  세계적인 설계, 제작 업체들과 건축인들이 뉴욕 한자리에 모여 혁신적인 접근과 디자털 혁신을 통한 건축 외장 설계를 주제로 지난 설계 시공된 사례와 개발한 신 설계 기법, 제작 기술을 발표하는 자리다. 말그대로, 자웅을 뽑내는 자리인 것이다. 총 650명이상의 관련자들이 하루 동안 다녀간, 보기 힘든 성공적인 행사였다.

현재 세계적으로 인기를 한 몸에 받고 있는 BIG 회사 의 Kai-Uwe Bergmann 사장의 Formgiving: Giving form to future,  고층 건물 설계로 유명한 SOM, Gensler, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Morphosis, FXCollaborative, Studio Gang, Rafel Vinoly Architects, SHoP architects, ODA, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners , 건축 회사, 파사드 외장 설계, 시공 회사들에서 온  총 60명의 연사들이 발표를 하였다.

총 60명의 연사들 중에  뉴욕에선 익숙하지 않은  회사 및 전문가 이름이 있었다.   다름아닌 한국의 비정형 파사드 전문 회사 WITHWORKS의 김 성진 사장이다.  오후 Session 3: Track 3에서 비정형 구조체 를 위한 패러메트릭 설계과 디지틀 제작, 시공을 주제로  WITHWORKS의 소개를 시작으로, 지난 수년 동안  개발해온 시스템 소개, 제작 설계를 통해 시공한 사례를 발표하였다. 위드웍스의 대표적인 프로젝트들은  세계적인 건축가들의 프로젝트들이 많다.  그중에는  ASMPTOTE, KPF, GRIMSHAW, SNOHETTA, MVDRV, MORPHOSIS, OMA의이 있다.   명실 상부, 수 많은 프로젝트를 할 수 있었던 이유는 위드웍스의 피 땀을 흘린 기술 계발의 노력이라 하겠다.

 초기 건축 외장 설계 전문업체 위드웍스로 기술을 계발만이 살아 남을 수 있는 유일한 방법을 안 김성진 사장은, 방문하는 모든 건물의 외장 디테일을 유심 관찰하며, 의문을 제기하고 , 해결 방안을  고민해왔다. 이렇게 비 정형 구조가 흔하지 않은 2000년 초반부터 관심과 집중의 노력으로 한걸음씩 내딘 발걸음이 2019년 11월 세계의 심장 맨하튼으로 위드웍스를 이끌어 오게 되었다.

 최근 정형 건축시장의 한계와 고도의 경쟁 상황 속에서, 위드웍스 김 성진 사장은 일찍부터 비정형구조 설계를 위한 디지털 설계 기법을 이용, 다양한 시도와 돌파구를 준비를 해왔다. 하지만 좁은 비정형 시장에서 건축 설계 용역만으로만  지금까지 성장해온 위드웍스를 계속적으로 성장시키는데 한계에 봉착하게 되었다. 새로운 비지니스 모덱로 돌파구가 필요 했던 것이다.

비정형 건물의 설계 및 제작을 보면, 많은 정밀 설계, 제작, 시공 기술이 필요하다. 어느 하나만 잘 한다고 고품질의 외장 상품을 만들어 낼 수가 없다. 총체적인 설계, 제작, 시공 과정의 이해가 반드시 필요하고, 설계자, 제작자, 시공자들의 고도의 협업이 필요한 사업이다.  정밀 기술과, 제작업체의 협업을 위해서 제작, 시공업체를 찾아 나서기 시작했다. 지난 반세기  한국의 자동차와 선박 업체들의 기술력은 세계적 수준이다. 그들의 건축 시장 의 비정형 소개와, 이해, 설득을 통해, 업체들과 WiSYS 라는 회사를 설립하게 되었다.  WiSYS 회사는 위드웍스 (Withworks)를 중심으로, 유창(Youchang), Mijie의 협력 업체로 구성되어 있다.
